TAKE A WETLANDS WALK

Introduces kids to the wonders of wetlands

~7th book in acclaimed Take a Walk™ Series~

“Written in an engaging, conversational style. constantly encourages its young readers to go outdoors and experience the natural world. I wish books like this existed when I was a kid! ” — Roger Wood, Ph.D., Director of Research, The Wetlands Institute

“The only thing missing is the smell of the wetlands—perhaps a scratch and sniff cover

next time?”— Cindy Duncan, Teacher Professional Development Coordinator

Chesapeake Bay Foundation

Philadelphia , PA , October 2008 —Wetlands may be the least-appreciated of our natural resources. Lacking the majesty of mountain ranges, the awesome power of oceans, or the pure beauty of verdant woods, wetlands are terribly under rated. These waterlogged areas act as protection from flood waters, are homes for countless species of plants and animals and contribute to the ecosystem on many levels. In brief, “Wetlands rock!” says Jane Kirkland, author of author of TAKE A WETLANDS WALK (Stillwater Publishing / $9.95 Paperback / October 2008). “Depending on where you live, there might be several kinds of wetlands nearby,” says Jane Kirkland, “I selected a variety of wetlands to include in this book, so you will hopefully find at least one kind near you.”

The seventh book in Kirkland’s award-winning Take A Walk® series, Take A Wetlands Walk, helps kids to understand and appreciate the vital role wetlands play in our world. Whether it’s a swamp, bog, lake or riverside, wetlands are fascinating places.

With this photo-filled, kid-friendly guide in hand, boys and girls age 8 and up are encouraged to search and discover. There are full-color photographs of wetland plants and animals as well as artwork and stories by readers. Jane provides plenty of space and instructions for readers to take field notes and make their own drawings of their exciting discoveries.

Other features include:

  • Full page spreads focusing on turtles and frogs—both abundant residents of wetlands.
  • Explanation and definitions of wetlands.
  • How wetlands contribute to our world.
  • “Visits” to estuaries, salt marshes, freshwater marshes, streams, rivers, lakes, vernal ponds, swamps and the Everglades.
  • Mini “field guides” to birds, plants, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and insects of the wetlands.

Television, computers, and video games have a strong hold on our kids. Kirkland hopes to break that hold, at least for a few moments a day, with her series of interactive nature books for kids. Take A Backyard Bird Walk, Take A Tree Walk and Take A Walk With Butterflies and Dragonflies, Take A City Nature Walk, Take A Beach Walk, Take A Cloud Walk (available as a free PDF download) and Take A Winter Nature Walk show kids that there is life beyond the box—WILDlife! As she does in all her books, Jane reminds readers to remember that, “All it takes is a few seconds a day,” to find adventure, discovery, beauty, and inspiration in nature. “Just remember,” she notes, “to take a minute to be in it™!”

About the author

Jane Kirkland was an award-winning computer software book author when she spotted a Bald Eagle soaring over her grocery store parking lot. In an instant she was unwittingly transformed. Her ensuing nature discoveries, revelations, and exciting backyard wildlife interactions became the basis for her popular series of multi-genre juvenile nonfiction. Her Take A Walk® series is recommended by many including the National Science Teachers Association and the National Wildlife Federation. Her books have won numerous awards including the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Education award and a Teacher’s Choice Award. Her infectious enthusiasm and quick wit are just two of the reasons why she was chosen and trained by Noble Prize recipient Al Gore to present his program “An Inconvenient Truth” throughout Pennsylvania. Jane has appeared on Animal Planet TV, NPR, and PBS. Fast becoming our nation’s favorite Citizen Scientist, Jane’s first book for educators, Creating a Field Guide to Your Schoolyard, is now making her a teacher’s pet!
